Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears’ Hot, Sticky Soul Sweetens
the Pot at Outside Lands
By Nick Bowden
August 28, 2009
Black Joe Lewis isn’t one to boast about his vocal prowess.
These days, the forceful singer is the suave frontman of
self-described “Garage Soul” act Black Joe Lewis and The
Honeybears. But for his initial public performances, he relied
heavily on liquid courage to boost his morale.
Lewis remembers his early open-mic days as “horrible.”
“I was usually to drunk or too scared to put on a good show,”
he says, “but people kept asking me to come back.”
Nerves aren’t really a problem anymore. Black Joe Lewis and The
Honeybears will hit fans with their explosive soul power Friday
night at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in San Francisco.
